Bellingham is a college town, a fishing town, a former mill town, an outdoor adventure playground and a city with the nation's second-highest per-capita rate of coffee joints. Nicknamed
"The City of Subdued Excitement," Bellingham values the non-suburban originality of its unpretentious dining, fine microbrews, independent booksellers, local art and spirit of environmentalism.
This city of 76,130 in the northwest corner of Washington is made up of
24 distinct neighborhoods, each with their own personalities, points of pride and challenges. Bellingham Neighborhood News is a collection of hyper-local news sites covering some of these neighborhoods.
The news
sites (links at right) are written by
Western Washington University students in Assistant Professor Carolyn Nielsen's Journalism 307 reporting class. Each student is assigned to cover a neighborhood for a quarter, getting to know the people who live there and exploring the issues that matter to them. Senior Instructor Stephen
Howie's class news sites are also participating.
Feel free to join in the conversation. We welcome your feedback.
